Minneapolis ICE Agent Shoots American Woman, Sparks Fierce Political Battle
January 9, 2026
A white American woman, Renee Good, was shot and killed by an immigration enforcement agent in Minneapolis on Wednesday. The event triggered fierce debate between political sides in the US.
Supporters of a tough immigration approach, including MAGA Republicans, say Good tried to run down the ICE agent who was detaining her. President Trump said on social media the agent acted in self-defense and blamed the "Radical Left" for attacks on law enforcement.
On the other side, Democrats and liberals view Good as an unarmed mother pulling her car away from agents in fear. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey called the official explanation "a garbage narrative" and accused ICE agents of shooting too quickly. Frey demanded ICE leave the city, citing "chaos and distrust."
The incident happened less than a mile from where George Floyd was killed in 2020 and has stirred protests and anger in Minneapolis, a city with a large immigrant population. Videos reviewed by local media suggest the situation was complex, with no clear aggressive move from Good before she was shot.
Renee Good, originally from Colorado and now living in Minneapolis, was a poet, devoted mother of three, and active in her community. Her mother said Good was "probably terrified" during the incident and remembered her as "one of the kindest people I’ve ever known."
A GoFundMe page for Good's family has raised over $530,000 so far. The case is still under investigation amid public outcry and political tension.
