Fire Destroys Three Luxury Yachts at Sydney's Spit Marina; One Injured
January 9, 2026
A fierce fire ripped through luxury yachts at Sydney’s Spit Marina early Friday, sinking three vessels and severely damaging a fourth. Emergency services arrived at 3:30 am to find one yacht fully ablaze. Four people were evacuated, with one woman treated for smoke inhalation and taken to hospital in stable condition. Adam Dewberry, Fire and Rescue NSW superintendent, said, "We’ve got three of these large yachts that have sunk. We’re now moving into the hazmat stage, working with the Port Authority of NSW to contain fuel and oil contamination with booms." He praised firefighters and the fire tug for preventing greater losses. Dewberry explained, "Yes, we’ve lost three vessels with a fourth one pretty badly damaged, but we could have lost many more of these yachts out there." Police said the fire is not suspicious after initial inquiries. The Spit Marina is a premier mooring site for large luxury yachts in Sydney. A northbound lane on Spit Road was closed Friday morning for safety.
