Liver and kidney problems induced by alcohol consumption surged in Andhra Pradesh between 2019 and 2024, according to a study by the state's health department. The study, analyzing admissions under the Arogyasri scheme, revealed a substantial increase in alcohol-associated health issues. Alcohol-related liver patients doubled from 14,026 to 29,369, with the 35-44 age group being the most affected. Neurological and kidney problems also exhibited significant rises. This increase in health problems coincided with allegations of a 'liquor scam' during the YSRCP government's tenure, adding a political angle to the medical concerns. The juxtaposition of the health department's findings under the TDP government further scrutinizes the previous regime. Special Chief Secretary Krishna Babu highlighted the perplexing surge in health issues despite no proportional increase in alcohol consumption. The quality of alcohol available in the state during this period is under scrutiny, especially considering the alleged disappearance of national liquor brands and their replacement with lesser-known labels.
