Dubai Launches Phase 1 of Driverless RoboTaxi Service in Key Areas
January 9, 2026
Dubai is ready to roll out driverless robotaxis. The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) announced Phase 1 of its RoboTaxi service with US company Cruise. Sixty-five public locations in Jumeirah and Umm Suqeim are covered. This launch is part of Dubai’s Smart Self-Driving Transport Strategy. The goal: 25% of all trips in Dubai will be in self-driving vehicles by 2030.
The 65 locations are split into two zones: Zone One has 17 spots and Zone Two has 48. These spots include busy tourist, commercial, and residential areas. The service is managed by Baidu Apollo Go’s autonomous vehicle system. A new 2,000-square-metre Autonomous Vehicles Operations and Control Centre in Dubai Science Park will oversee the fleet. It handles monitoring, maintenance, software updates, charging, safety, and operations.
RTA gave Baidu Apollo Go a unique permit allowing fully autonomous vehicles on public roads without safety drivers. This is a big step in making robotaxis commercial.
Meanwhile, tech companies like WeRide and Uber have started public test rides in Jumeirah and Umm Suqeim. Riders can book the robotaxis through the Uber app. These trials will grow before the full driverless service begins.
The designated pick-up and drop-off points are near major landmarks and neighborhoods. There have been successful tests with safety drivers in areas like Dubai Silicon Oasis. Full driverless robotaxis will start once testing and approvals finish.
Dubai is now steering into the future with these RoboTaxis, aiming to become a world leader in smart transport.
