Israel Hits Hezbollah Sites in Lebanon Amid Disarmament Efforts After Ceasefire
January 9, 2026
Israel’s military said it launched air strikes on Hezbollah targets in several parts of Lebanon on Friday. The strikes came a day after Lebanon’s army said it had finished the first phase of its plan to disarm Hezbollah in the south. The Israeli military said it hit "weapons storage facilities and a weapons production site" used by Hezbollah. It also targeted "launch sites, rocket launchers and military structures." Lebanon’s National News Agency reported the strikes targeted southern Lebanon and the eastern Bekaa region, where Hezbollah is strong. No casualties were reported immediately, according to AFP. The attacks occurred despite a ceasefire that ended two months of war in November 2024. Under the ceasefire, Hezbollah must withdraw forces north of the Litani River and remove military infrastructure there. Israel has kept up strikes in Lebanon, saying it targets Hezbollah sites and operatives. It also maintains troops in five parts of southern Lebanon it calls strategic. The Israeli military stated, "The targets that were struck...pose a threat to the State of Israel." Lebanon’s army said it had met the goals of the first disarmament phase south of the Litani River and plans to extend the effort nationwide. The US and others have pressured Lebanon to disarm Hezbollah after the ceasefire. Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office called Lebanon’s work an "encouraging beginning, but they are far from sufficient." Tensions are still high. Lebanese media said an Israeli strike on Thursday killed one near Sidon. Israel said it targeted a Hezbollah operative. Lebanon’s army says it took control in southern areas once dominated by Hezbollah and removed infrastructure, calling progress "effective and tangible," but more is needed. Hezbollah refuses to disarm north of the Litani River, keeping a strong presence especially in Bekaa Valley. Israel accuses Hezbollah of trying to rebuild its military power. Lebanon denies this, saying Israeli strikes break the ceasefire and hurt efforts to stabilize the south.
