B1/B2 Visa Rejections Rise in India Amid Ongoing US H-1B Stamping Delays
January 10, 2026
Several applicants reported B1/B2 visa rejections in India over the past few days. Most did not receive specific reasons for denial. The rejections surfaced on social media, coinciding with long H-1B visa stamping delays since December 15 due to tighter social media checks.
B1/B2 visas are short-term visitor visas meant only for business or tourism visits, not for working in the US. The US Consulate General Mumbai recently issued a reminder about correct use of these visas. "Know the rules before you travel. A B1/B2 visitor visa can be used to conduct business meetings and negotiate contracts but you need a different visa to work. Unauthorized employment can lead to deportation and/or a permanent ban from entering America in the future," the consulate warned.
One Reddit user shared her experience of being rejected at the Mumbai consulate. She had explained she was travelling for business meetings with a client and their suppliers. However, the visa officer asked her, "Who are these suppliers?" catching her off guard. Although she clarified her oversight role in the client-supplier relationship, the officer denied her visa.
She was given a 214b slip saying she failed to prove strong ties to India or clearly justify her visit purpose. Many on Reddit said the visa process now feels like a gamble. They noted visa officers often decide based on body language as well, making approvals unpredictable.
