Swiss Fire Tragedy Sparks Debate on Local Government and Fire Safety Inspections
January 10, 2026
A fire at Le Constellation bar in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, killed 40 people and injured 116 on New Year's Eve. The bar had not been inspected since 2019. Mayor Nicolas Feraud admitted only 40 of 128 bars and restaurants in the area were inspected in 2025. Fire safety inspections in this region are the town council's responsibility but lacked proper resources, said the mayor. Many Swiss citizens are angry about this failure given the wealth of the area. Journalists asked the mayor about possible corruption; he replied, "Absolutely not." Families demand transparency. One mother wrote, "We urgently need complete, transparent answers." Many want the mayor and council to resign, but Feraud refused, saying, "You don't abandon ship in the middle of a storm." The tragedy has sparked debate about Switzerland’s decentralized government system. Critics say part-time local officials may struggle to manage all duties properly. National leaders promised a strict, independent investigation. Bar owner is in custody, and legal cases against town council members are underway. There are calls to transfer fire inspections from local to cantonal authorities. The tragedy damaged Switzerland’s reputation for safety and accountability. President Guy Parmelin said justice is expected "without delay and without leniency." The community mourns deeply but questions how such a disaster was allowed to happen despite efficient emergency responses. Authorities see it as a moral duty to find answers for the families and the nation.
