Indonesia Blocks Elon Musk’s Grok Chatbot Over Risk of AI Pornographic Content
January 10, 2026
Indonesia temporarily blocked Elon Musk’s Grok chatbot on Saturday due to risks of AI-generated pornographic content. This made Indonesia the first country to deny access to the AI tool. The ban comes amid global concerns about sexualized content produced by Grok. xAI, the startup behind Grok, restricted its image generation and editing features to paying users after reports of sexualized outputs, including images of children. Indonesia’s communications and digital minister Meutya Hafid said, “The government views the practice of non-consensual sexual deepfakes as a serious violation of human rights, dignity, and the security of citizens in the digital space.” Indonesian officials have summoned X company representatives to discuss the issue. Elon Musk warned on X that users creating illegal content with Grok would face consequences similar to uploading illegal material. Indonesia’s strict laws ban sharing obscene content online, especially with its large Muslim population. The block followed Grok’s own shutdown of its image creation feature for most users on Friday after strong backlash. Musk faces threats of fines and possible bans of X in the UK, while Grok’s image manipulation has reportedly been used to remove clothes from photos of women and place them in sexualized scenes—now limited to paying subscribers. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese also condemned the misuse of Grok for exploitative sexual content. He called the tool’s use “abhorrent” and criticized social media’s lack of responsibility. Australia’s eSafety Office has seen a rise in reports about sexualized imagery from Grok and warned it will act under the Online Safety Act. The watchdog confirmed that services like Grok must detect and remove child sexual exploitation and illegal material according to Australia’s code standards.
