NIA Chargesheets Two More in Assam Independence Day IED Case, Total Now Five
January 10, 2026
The National Investigation Agency has charged two more men in the Assam Independence Day IED seizure case of 2024. On January 9, the NIA filed a supplementary chargesheet in Guwahati naming Bhargab Gogoi and Sumu Gogoi. This raises the total accused to five, after three others were charged in June 2025. Both Bhargab and Sumu Gogoi, residents of Dibrugarh district, were arrested last June. They are accused of providing terror funds to Jahnu Boruah, who admitted to planting four of the 11 IEDs seized in August 2024. The IEDs were part of a protest and boycott call for Independence Day issued by ULFA(I) chief Paresh Baruah. The case began at Dispur police station over a conspiracy by the banned terror group ULFA(I) to wage war against the Indian government through multiple blasts across Assam. The NIA took over the investigation in September 2024.
