8 Workers Dead in Belagavi Sugar Factory Boiler Blast, Trade Unions Demand Probe
January 10, 2026
A tragic boiler explosion at Inamdar Sugar Factory in Marakumbi village, Belagavi district, has killed eight workers. The Trade Union Coordination Centre and Karnataka Trade Union Centre have demanded a thorough investigation into the incident. At a press conference, Ashok Barki, district general secretary of the Karnataka Trade Union Centre, condemned the accident and pointed fingers at factory management and officials for negligence. He said, "No safety officer had been appointed at the factory and no periodic inspections had been done." Barki added, "If preventive measures had been taken, loss of lives could have been prevented." He further alleged that officials avoided inspections due to pressure from factory owners. The unions plan to urge the government to launch a detailed inquiry, take legal action against those responsible, and provide ₹50 lakh compensation to each family of the deceased. District vice president Venkatesh Pyati, treasurer Ashok Honnali, and organising secretary Jagadish Andemmamavar were also present at the event.
