Syrian Forces Deploy in Aleppo After Deadly Clashes with Kurdish Fighters
January 11, 2026
Syrian security forces moved into the Sheikh Maqsoud area of Aleppo on Saturday after days of intense clashes with Kurdish fighters that killed at least 22 people. Two Kurdish fighters blew themselves up when surrounded, but no other casualties were reported, said Syria’s state news agency SANA. Gunfire was still heard around noon. Early on Saturday, security forces urged residents to stay indoors for safety during sweeping operations. Later, an explosive drone struck the Aleppo Governorate building shortly after a press conference by two Cabinet ministers and a local official. State TV blamed Kurdish fighters for the drone attack, a claim denied by the Kurdish-led force, which said it avoids civilian targets, according to news agency AP. The fighting erupted Tuesday in Kurdish-majority neighborhoods after talks between the government and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) failed over integrating Kurdish fighters into the national army. Government troops took control of Achrafieh and Bani Zaid areas. Both sides reported civilian deaths amid the clashes, and over 140,000 people fled their homes. Syrian authorities started transferring Kurdish fighters from Aleppo to northeast areas controlled by Kurds following some surrenders. State TV said military operations in Sheikh Maqsoud had stopped, while AFP reporters saw fighters leaving on buses under security guard. Hundreds of residents waited to return once the fighting ends. Meanwhile, Jordan’s foreign minister spoke with the US special envoy to Syria, offering support to help secure a ceasefire and safe Kurdish withdrawal.
