Dozens Arrested, One Officer Injured in Minneapolis Protests Over ICE Shooting
January 11, 2026
Dozens of people were arrested and one police officer was injured during protests in Minneapolis over the shooting death of Renee Nicole Good by a US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent. About 1,000 protesters gathered on Friday night near the Canopy Hotel, where ICE agents were believed to be staying. Police declared the assembly unlawful after some protesters forced entry into the hotel and threw ice, snow, and rocks at officers and vehicles. No serious injuries were reported; one officer suffered minor injuries from a chunk of ice but did not need medical help.
The demonstrations erupted after 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good was shot in her car on Wednesday by ICE agent Jonathan Ross. The Trump administration said the agent acted in self-defence. However, local officials, including Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, said Good posed no threat and was trying to leave the scene. Videos show ICE agents confronting Good’s SUV before shots were fired as she tried to drive off.
Three Minnesota congresswomen tried to visit an ICE facility on Saturday but were asked to leave. They accused ICE and the Department of Homeland Security of blocking Congressional oversight. Protesters plan more demonstrations this weekend in Minneapolis and other US cities like Texas, Florida, and Washington DC.
The FBI is investigating the shooting, but Minnesota officials said they were excluded from the federal probe and will open their own inquiry. Vice-President Kamala Harris called it a federal issue. Mayor Frey praised peaceful protesters but warned those causing damage would face arrest.
The unrest highlights growing anger in Minnesota over ICE operations amid national protests against immigration enforcement following the incident.
