A 44-year-old woman, Rachna Yadav, was shot dead at close range in Shalimar Bagh, northwest Delhi, on Saturday morning, January 11, 2026. Police believe the killing is linked to the 2023 murder of her husband, Vijendra Yadav, whose case is currently under trial. Rachna, who was the president of her local resident welfare association, was shot in the head and died instantly. She was returning from visiting a neighbour when two men stopped her. When she identified herself, one assailant fired the fatal shot. CCTV footage caught the accused, who escaped on a sports bike with a companion waiting nearby. Police recovered an empty cartridge from the scene after receiving a PCR call at 10:59 a.m. Investigators say the attackers had prior knowledge of Rachna's identity and movements. A senior police officer said, "In the 2023 case, Vijendra Yadav was allegedly murdered due to previous enmity. Bharat Yadav and five others were named as accused. While five of the accused were arrested and are facing trial, the main accused, Bharat Yadav, is still absconding and has been declared a proclaimed offender." Rachna was a vital witness in her husband's murder trial. Police suspect her killing was aimed at weakening the case and intimidating other witnesses. Additional Commissioner of Police (Northwest), Bhisham Singh, said, "Prima facie, it appears that the present case is linked to the earlier murder. We are re-examining all aspects of the 2023 case and the role of the proclaimed offender (Bharat)." Rachna’s elder daughter, Kanika Yadav, told reporters, "Bharat Yadav planned and executed my mother's murder. My mother was killed because she was standing firm as a witness in my father's murder case. They were afraid of conviction based on her statement." Rachna is survived by two daughters. Police have increased security in the area and formed multiple teams to trace the killers and any masterminds behind the crime. Investigations continue.
