In Dirai upazila of Sunamganj district, Bangladesh, 21-year-old Joy Mohapatra ended his life on Friday, reportedly after a conflict over a Tk 500 debt. Joy’s family stated that he had been verbally abused and beaten by a neighboring shopkeeper, Amirul Islam. "My son died due to Amirul Islam's insulting behaviour and provocation," said Joy's mother, Shelly Mohapatra. She explained that when Joy failed to pay the money in the morning, Amirul took away his mobile phone. Later, when Joy asked for the SIM card, Amirul told him to return in the evening. Upon his return, Amirul locked the door and slapped Joy. Shelly said Joy collapsed after returning home, with saliva coming out of his mouth. She added, "My son had consumed poison bought from that shop." Local sources reported that Joy had bought a mobile phone from Amirul Islam for Tk 5,500 and still owed Tk 500.
