MP CM Mohan Yadav Launches Clean Water Drive After Indore Deaths
January 11, 2026
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has called on urban local bodies to ensure safe drinking water for all. This comes after seven people died in Indore's Bhagirathpura area due to diarrhoea caused by contaminated water. Indore is the cleanest city in India and Yadav is also its guardian minister. He warned officials to prevent water contamination at all costs and issued strict orders. On January 10, after returning from Sagar district, CM Yadav launched the 'Swachh Jal Abhiyan' or Clean Water Campaign. The campaign aims to provide safe drinking water in both rural and urban areas of Madhya Pradesh. Yadav said, "The quality of drinking water must be tested regularly and alternative arrangements should be made immediately if contamination is detected." He added, "This is a big challenge, but it must be addressed with seriousness so that the state can set an example for the country." The campaign will run in two phases: January 10 to February 28, and March 1 to March 31. It includes cleaning water purification units, fixing pipeline leakages, and monitoring through GIS mapping and a mobile app. A helpline number 181 has been set up to register drinking water complaints, which will be resolved in a timely manner. CM Yadav also called for 'Jal Sunwai' or water grievance hearings to address citizens' issues seriously. The Opposition Congress demands the resignation of MP Urban Development Minister Kailash Vijayvargiya, whose constituency includes the affected area. The party plans a big protest on January 11 over the water deaths. Officials including mayors, district collectors, and commissioners joined the meeting by video conference. Additional Chief Secretary Sanjay Dubey highlighted efforts for water security, conservation and public awareness, with low-cost water quality testing and coordination with the Swachh Bharat Mission. CM Yadav warned, "Any laxity in the supply of clean drinking water would not be tolerated."
