Gandikota Festival 2026 draws crowds to India’s Grand Canyon and historic sites
January 11, 2026
The Gandikota Festival 2026 began Sunday evening in Kadapa district’s Jammalamadugu constituency. Gandikota, famous as a geological wonder and a historic treasure, saw visitors from nearby states Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Telangana flocking to the site during the weekend. The gorge here is often called India’s Grand Canyon. Tourists came not just to see the gorge but also the historic fort, ancient Madhavaraya temple, and Jama Masjid, all favorite spots for lovers of history and architecture.
Ministers Kandula Durgesh (Tourism) and S. Savitha (Handloom and Textiles) formally opened the festival with colorful events. This festival had paused for a few years but was revived with fresh energy after the NDA government took office, the ministers said.
Local legislator and Government Whip C. Adinarayana Reddy highlighted efforts to develop nearby reservoirs Mylavaram and Gandikota to meet water needs and boost tourism. He praised the new helicopter rides, calling the view of the gorge from above "a priceless experience."
Collector Sridhar Cherukuri shared that the festival will feature sessions on Gandikota’s history, cookery contests showcasing local dishes, and photo exhibits focusing on the region’s beauty. He noted that many tourists now prefer to stay overnight to watch the sunrise over the gorge, a special highlight.
TDP district chief C. Bhupesh Reddy, former MLC V. Narayana Reddy, Superintendent of Police Nachiket Vishwanath Shelke, and Joint Collector Visweswara Naidu also attended.
Before the festival’s start, a 'Sobha Yatra' parade took place with participants dressed as historical characters, celebrating the rich Telugu culture.
