Indian Immigrant in Brampton Targeted in Shooting, Threatened with $500,000 Extortion
January 11, 2026
An Indian man who came to Canada three years ago and runs an immigration and education consulting firm faced a scary extortion attempt. Last weekend, multiple shots were fired at his Brampton home while he, his wife, and child were inside. The man asked to remain anonymous and has filed a police complaint. The next day, he got a video on his phone showing the shooting. It appeared to be recorded from inside a car, showing the shooter aiming at his house. The extortionists demanded $500,000 and gave him just one day to pay. They threatened, "We will kill your family," according to the man. He said, "First, they sent me the video and then they called me," and he told them he did not have the money. Neighbour’s security cameras also captured the shooting, which showed at least eight shots hitting cars and the garage door. The man said he has left that Brampton home near Sandalwood Parkway and Creditview Road and will not return. Police say such extortion is not new in the area. Peel Police’s Extortion Investigations Task Force, formed in 2024 to tackle rising cases in the South Asian business community, is investigating. Over 400 extortion cases were reported last year. Recently, Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown wrote to the federal government for help to fight the growing threat of extortion and organized crime. Brown said without federal aid, "communities such as Brampton are left exposed to criminal networks that operate internationally, exploit digital platforms and rely on intimidation to silence victims."
