Trump Cuts Cuba Off from Venezuelan Oil after Maduro's Ouster
January 11, 2026
WEST PALM BEACH: President Donald Trump warned Cuba on Sunday that the era of Venezuelan oil and money flowing to the island is over. Cuba, a close ally of Venezuela, has been cut off from Venezuelan oil shipments as US forces seize tankers to control Venezuela's oil. "Cuba long lived off Venezuelan oil and money and had offered security in return, BUT NOT ANYMORE!" Trump said on social media. "THERE WILL BE NO MORE OIL OR MONEY GOING TO CUBA - ZERO!" He added, "I strongly suggest they make a deal, BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE," without specifying what deal he meant. The Cuban government said 32 of its military personnel died during a US operation last weekend that captured Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro. These troops were in Caracas as part of the Cuba-Venezuela agreement. Trump said, "Venezuela doesn't need protection anymore from the thugs and extortionists who held them hostage for so many years. Venezuela now has the United States of America, the most powerful military in the World (by far!), to protect them, and protect them we will." Responding to a post predicting Marco Rubio as Cuba’s future president, Trump said, "Sounds good to me!" Trump and his officials have increased pressure on Cuba, which suffers amid Venezuela’s crisis. Cuba is facing severe economic hardship with blackouts and shortages. Trump said previously about Cuba's economy, "It's going down, It's going down for the count."
