Kerala Increases Food Prices Up to 25% at Government Guest Houses Amid Inflation
January 12, 2026
The Kerala government has increased food and beverage prices by up to 25% at its guest houses, Yatri Nivas and Kerala Houses, effective immediately. This price hike comes amid rising costs of essential commodities such as vegetables, provisions, and cooking gas. The rates for many items had not changed since 2017. Now, for example, four pieces of dosa or idli will cost ₹68, up from ₹55. An omelette is priced at ₹27, increased from ₹22. Vegetarian meals now cost ₹75, up from ₹60. Chicken biriyani costs ₹137, up from ₹110, while fish pollichathu is now ₹125 from the earlier rate. Shahul Hameed, general secretary of the All Kerala Caterers Association, said, "Rising chicken prices, which have surged by about 50% in recent weeks, are making life difficult for caterers and hoteliers." Many event bookings were made months ago, preventing caterers from raising prices in contracts, forcing them to absorb growing costs. Provisions and vegetable prices have risen by about 30% compared to last year. The price of raw coconut went from ₹33 a year ago to ₹65 now after hitting ₹85 a few months back. Coconut oil prices, previously around ₹210 per litre, remain near ₹320 per kg. Commercial cooking gas increased by ₹119 in January. Experts say the State and Centre governments need to intervene to control rising prices; otherwise, ordinary people will suffer the most.
