Kamaraj Road Reopens After 7 Years, Eases Bengaluru Traffic but BWSSB Pipeline Work Looms
January 12, 2026
Kamaraj Road in central Bengaluru has fully reopened after nearly seven years. Commuters say this has eased heavy traffic on MG Road and nearby areas like Commercial Street and Brigade Road. The road was shut in June 2019 for Metro station construction on the Pink Line.
Shankar K.S., a daily commuter, said, "For years, this stretch was a bottleneck. Now, at least there is some breathing space, and traffic is not spilling endlessly into Brigade Road and Commercial Street."
However, some drivers like Balaji R. feel traffic signals on Cubbon Road have not improved. He noted, "The signal near the junction now takes five to eight minutes to turn green, and vehicles pile up quickly during peak hours."
The Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) plans to dig up MG Road soon to lay new water and sewer pipes between Brigade Road and Trinity Circle. Many commuters fear this will bring back traffic chaos. "Just when one road opens, another is dug up. If MG Road is disrupted again, the entire area will slip back into chaos," said Mohan Babu.
Commuters also miss the trees along Kamaraj Road. Shankar added, "The road surface is well laid and smooth, but it feels bare and harsh. Earlier, this stretch had trees that offered shade and a pleasant drive. Now, it looks completely desolate."
Officials from Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) promised landscaping work to restore greenery in the coming months as part of post-construction efforts.
The reopening of Kamaraj Road brings temporary relief for Bengaluru commuters but the upcoming pipeline work and traffic signal issues pose fresh challenges.
