The Supreme Court Collegium, led by Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, has recommended Justice Sujoy Paul for the position of Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court. The recommendation was made on January 9, 2026. Justice Paul is serving as a judge in the Calcutta High Court, with his original posting from the Madhya Pradesh High Court. This is the second month in a row that the Collegium has proposed new Chief Justices for various State High Courts. In December 2025, the Collegium recommended five judges for Chief Justice roles: Justice Manoj Gupta of Allahabad High Court for Uttarakhand High Court, Justice Revati P. Mohit Dere of Bombay High Court for Meghalaya High Court, Justice M.S. Sonak of Bombay High Court for Jharkhand High Court, Justice A. Muhamed Mustaque of Kerala High Court for Sikkim High Court, and Justice Sangam Kumar Sahoo of Orissa High Court for Patna High Court. This series of recommendations signals ongoing leadership changes in India's high courts.
