Supreme Court Appoints Judge Sunaina Sharma for CBI Coal Scam Trials
January 13, 2026
On January 12, 2026, the Supreme Court appointed Judge Sunaina Sharma to conduct trials in the coal scam cases investigated by the CBI. The decision came during a Bench headed by Chief Justice Surya Kant. Senior advocate and special public prosecutor R. S. Cheema stated that the previous Special CBI Judge, Sanjay Bansal, continued only from April 8, 2025, for six months, and more than eight months have now passed since then.
The Bench reviewed three candidates proposed by the Delhi High Court to replace Judge Bansal. The Chief Justice ordered, "We appoint Sunaina Sharma as a special judge (the Prevention of Corruption Act/CBI/coal block allocation cases). The High Court is at liberty to seek replacement of the aforesaid in case of any exigency."
The court also instructed its registry to list all pleas connected to coal scam cases before an appropriate Bench.
Earlier on April 8, 2025, the court had replaced Special CBI Judge Arun Bhardwaj with Dheeraj Mor. Currently, 29 corruption cases filed by the CBI remain pending in two special courts made for coal scam trials. So far, 27 cases have been concluded.
On January 16, 2025, the Directorate of Enforcement informed the Supreme Court that 45 prosecution complaints, including supplementary ones, were pending under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).
In 2014, the Supreme Court had quashed the allocation of 214 coal blocks allotted by the Centre between 1993 and 2010, marking a historic decision in the coal block scam saga.
