Mumbai BMC Elections Heat Up with Shiv Sena-MNS Reunion and BJP Front Lead
January 13, 2026
Mumbai’s Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections are heating up, turning the city into a hub of complex political rivalry. On January 15, voters will decide who controls India’s richest civic body, with a budget over ₹74,000 crore. The main story is the surprising alliance between Shiv Sena (UBT) and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), usually fierce rivals. They have joined to take on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Shinde Sena alliance, which already holds several wards unopposed.
Congress has broken away from its old partner Shiv Sena (UBT). It has teamed up with the Vanchit Bahujan Aaghadi (VBA), aiming to capture Dalit and minority votes by contesting 62 seats together. The BJP and Shinde Sena alliance remains strong, with BJP contesting 137 seats and Shinde Sena 90. However, tensions about power-sharing remain.
The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), led by Ajit Pawar, is contesting solo with 94 seats, adding to the complexity. Meanwhile, political moves focus on key voter groups—Dalits by Congress and VBA, Marathas by the Thackeray factions, minorities by VBA, and women with BJP fielding 76 female candidates.
This election reveals a tangled web of shifting alliances and rivalries. Former allies are now opponents, and new teams are forming, making the BMC election a big test for Maharashtra’s political landscape. Voters face a clear choice that will influence Mumbai and state politics for years to come.
Counting will happen on January 16, with all eyes on Mumbai to witness the results of this fierce urban political battle.
