Women’s Groups Demand Action Over Actress Anasuya Bharadwaj’s Online Harassment
January 13, 2026
The Women’s and Transgender Organisations Joint Action Committee spoke out against the online abuse faced by Telugu actor Anasuya Bharadwaj. At a press conference in Hyderabad on January 13, 2026, they condemned deepfake harassment, media vilification, and misogynistic debates that target women in the public eye. The Committee said the controversy around women’s clothing was used to justify cyber abuse and moral policing. They pointed to recent trolling of Anasuya Bharadwaj and actor Nidhhi Agerwal triggered by remarks from a Telugu actor. "Such incidents are not about how women dress but about how society excuses male behaviour by placing the burden of violence on women," the Committee said. Activist Swetha Varma cited National Crime Records Bureau data, noting violent crimes against women rose to 4.5 lakh in 2023. She criticized public debates that divert attention from this rise to policing women’s attire. Actress Sravya called out the aggressive backlash women face when asserting independence, rejecting the excuse that men "cannot control themselves." The Committee criticized TV and YouTube shows spreading misogynistic rhetoric for TRPs, calling it "irresponsible and cruel." They demanded strict legal action against Telugu actor Sivaji for his remarks and urged the Women’s Commission to prosecute everyone involved, including those amplifying the remarks. Anasuya Bharadwaj, joining virtually, accused media sections of twisting her words and increasing her harassment. She revealed she faced abuse for over two years, with threats against her family pushing her to speak out. The Committee pledged support for Anasuya and other women facing harassment. They plan to write to the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting seeking notices for those creating and spreading harmful content.
