Labour Rights NGO Uncovers Worker Exploitation in Pop Mart’s Labubus Toy Factories
January 13, 2026
Popular Chinese toy Labubus, made by Pop Mart, is facing a storm over worker exploitation claims. China Labor Watch (CLW), a New York-based NGO, investigated Shunjia Toys, a factory in Jiangxi province, which supplies Labubus. They found 16- and 17-year-old workers doing full assembly line jobs without legal protections. Some workers signed blank contracts and were pressured to meet extremely high daily production targets of 4,000 toys per team.
CLW's three-month investigation in 2025 involved interviews with over 50 employees. They found many were unaware of their contract details. Overtime was rampant, exceeding 100 hours monthly, despite Chinese law limiting it to 36 hours. The factory claims a 12 million annual toy capacity, but CLW estimates output exceeding 24 million units.
Pop Mart’s CEO Wang Ning said the company expects 20bn yuan in revenues in 2025. The toy’s rising popularity has pushed demand and production sharply higher. Pop Mart said it takes worker welfare seriously and is investigating the report, promising stronger audits and corrective action if needed.
CLW’s executive director Li Qiang noted this is common in China’s manufacturing boom, where workers face harsh conditions under fast production growth. The report also highlights issues with a black market for fake Labubus toys made in unsafe home factories.
Li urged Pop Mart to improve worker grievance channels, increase supply chain transparency, and reveal more about outsourced production. Shunjia Toys did not respond to requests for comment. As Chinese brands expand globally, such labour issues put pressure on them to raise standards.
