Greenlanders Send Clear Message to Trump During US Talks on Greenland
January 14, 2026
The US Vice President JD Vance hosted Danish and Greenlandic foreign ministers along with US Senator Marco Rubio at the White House on Wednesday. The key topic was Greenland’s future status. Greenland is the world's biggest island and a semi-autonomous territory of Denmark, located in the Arctic.
Former US President Donald Trump expressed strong interest in Greenland. He said he wants it for national security reasons and claimed he would take it "the easy way or the hard way." This remark has stirred tensions.
Denmark firmly insists that Greenland belongs to it as sovereign territory. Major European countries including the UK and France support Denmark's position.
In the Greenlandic capital Nuuk, Europe editor Katya Adler spoke with Greenlanders. They had a clear message for Donald Trump regarding his claims and intentions about their island.
The discussions at the White House highlight the serious diplomatic focus on the Arctic region’s future. Greenland’s status remains a key issue between Denmark, the US, and European powers.
