Athar Khan Seeks Bail After Supreme Court Frees Five Accused in 2020 Delhi Riots Case
January 14, 2026
Athar Khan, accused in the 2020 Delhi riots conspiracy, has filed a bail application in a New Delhi court. He says he faces charges similar to five accused recently granted bail by the Supreme Court. Athar Khan is charged with organising a protest at Chand Bagh and giving inflammatory speeches there. The police say he attended secret meetings where he reportedly said, "the time has come to burn Delhi" and helped destroy CCTV cameras. He is one of 11 alleged organisers of the anti-CAA/NRC meeting. Khan was also named in cases of rioting and looting during the riots. The court has scheduled his bail hearing for January 19, 2026. Earlier, on January 6, Salim Malik filed a similar bail plea. On January 5, the Supreme Court granted bail to five accused—Gulfisha Fatima, Meeran Haider, Shifa Ur Rehman, Mohd Saleem Khan, and Shadab Ahmad. However, bail was denied to Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam, as they face charges under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. Out of 20 accused, two are absconding and seven, including Athar Khan and former AAP leader Tahir Hussain, remain in jail. Tahir Hussain's bail application is pending in Karkardooma Court.
