Cyprus Probes Russian Diplomat’s Suicide Amid Missing Russian Businessman and Corruption Scandal
January 14, 2026
Cyprus is investigating the "unnatural death" of Alexei Panov, a Russian diplomat at the embassy. Police say the autopsy suggests suicide. However, the Russian embassy denied access to the crime scene and refused to share Panov’s suicide note. Police recovered the body from the embassy courtyard. Panov, 41, reportedly worked as a GRU officer managing espionage equipment in Cyprus. His death occurred within 24 hours of Vladislav Baumgertner, former CEO of Russian potash giant Uralkali, going missing in Cyprus. The search for Baumgertner has expanded to include British base personnel. Cyprus, home to many wealthy Russians and nicknamed "Moscow on the Med," now faces suspicion about any links between these cases. Authorities say no link is found so far, but diplomats see the events as mysterious and sinister. Meanwhile, Cyprus grapples with a corruption scandal triggered by an online video accusing top officials, including President Nikos Christodoulides's circle, of financial wrongdoing. The scandal sparked resignations but increased calls for reform. Officials suggest the video is a Russian hybrid attack punishing Cyprus’s westward shift and EU presidency takeover. Christodoulides denies any wrongdoing. Experts say this is the biggest political crisis Cyprus has seen under his leadership.
