Nearly a Dozen Pipe Bombs Found Across Canberra Footpaths, Police Warn Public
January 15, 2026
Canberra police discovered nearly a dozen pipe bombs on footpaths and parks, causing a major investigation. As of Thursday morning, 11 bombs were found along a 1km stretch near Lake Ginninderra in the city’s north-west. Some were intact, others had exploded. ACT police Deputy Acting Inspector Anna Wronski said the public must not touch or bring the bombs to stations. She said, "We do not want members of the public to pick them up. We do not want members of the public to bring them to police stations. We want them to call triple-zero immediately." Police do not know the origin or who placed the bombs but treat the situation with high seriousness. No injuries have been reported. Wronski also said, "Any explosive is dangerous. That’s why we’re taking it so seriously. An explosive in a public place does raise a lot of concern for police." The police shared images showing silver pipes with caps and possible fuses. Authorities confirmed the incident is not being treated as terrorism. The search continues to ensure no more devices remain a threat in public spaces.
