Somalia Ends Port Deals with UAE Over Somaliland Recognition by Israel
January 15, 2026
Somalia has cancelled all port management and security agreements with the United Arab Emirates. This comes after Israel recognised Somaliland as an independent state, a move Somalia strongly opposes. Somalia's President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud said, "We had a good relationship with the UAE, but unfortunately, they didn't engage us as an independent and sovereign nation." The UAE has been a key player in Somalia's ports, with operations in Bosaso, Kismayo, and Berbera. However, recent events, including Israel's recognition of Somaliland and UAE support for Yemeni separatist leader Aidarous al-Zubaidi's departure through Somali territory, led to the breakup. Analyst Omar Mahmoud said Somalia suspects the UAE supported Israel's decision. Somaliland, which broke away from Somalia over 30 years ago, celebrated the recognition by Israel, the first country to do so. Somali officials also accuse the UAE of smuggling al-Zubaidi using Somali airfields, which the UAE denies. DP World, the Dubai-based firm operating Berbera port, stated it would continue operations despite Somalia's government move. Somaliland and other regional administrations dismissed Somalia's cancellation as invalid. Somalia controls the country's airspace and plans to use diplomatic pressure to contest UAE activities. Experts believe trust between Somalia and the UAE is lost and restoring ties will be difficult. The diplomatic rift also reflects wider regional divisions and alliances involving Israel, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and others.
