ICE Officer Shoots Venezuelan Man in Minneapolis During Enforcement Operation
January 15, 2026
A US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer shot a Venezuelan man in the leg on Wednesday evening in north Minneapolis. The shooting happened around 7 pm near North Sixth Street and North 24th Avenue during a traffic stop, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).
The Venezuelan man, called an “illegal alien” by DHS, initially fled in a vehicle, crashed into a parked car, and then ran on foot. When the officer tried to arrest him, the man resisted and assaulted the officer. Two other people came from a nearby apartment and attacked the officer with a snow shovel and broom handle.
Fearing for his life, the ICE officer fired a defensive shot that hit the man in the leg. Both the injured Venezuelan and the officer were hospitalized. The other attackers and the man later locked themselves inside a residence but were arrested by a special ICE tactical team.
The incident comes just one week after ICE agent Jonathan Ross fatally shot Renee Nicole Good, a 37-year-old American woman, in south Minneapolis. That shooting caused widespread protests and anger toward ICE’s immigration tactics.
City officials urged people to stay calm. Minneapolis leaders called for ICE to leave the city and state immediately. DHS confirmed the details of the shooting and defended the officer’s actions as self-defense.
This event is part of “Operation Metro Surge,” the largest DHS deployment ever with about 3,000 immigration officers sent to Minnesota. The operation has heightened tensions between federal agents and local communities.
