Saudi Arabia to Boost Mining Sector with Big Exploration Bids in 2026 and 2027
January 15, 2026
Saudi Arabia is set to boost its mining sector with big exploration opportunities scheduled for 2026 and 2027. The Kingdom wants to exploit its vast untapped minerals, worth about $2.5 trillion, and become a global leader in supplying critical minerals needed for energy and new technologies.
Saudi Minister of Industry and Mineral Resources Bandar Al-Khorayef made the announcement at the International Mining Conference in Riyadh. This event attracted participants from 100 countries, 59 international organizations, and around 400 speakers.
Saudi Arabia has already awarded licenses covering over 33,000 square kilometers. The ninth bidding round alone handed 172 mining sites to 24 local and international companies. The Arabian Shield has been fully studied, giving solid data for future exploration.
Investment in mining exploration soared from SAR 1 million in 2020 to SAR 1.052 billion (around $280 million) in 2024. Minister Al-Khorayef said the mining sector is now about more than just extraction. It aims to create jobs, support economic diversification, and drive sustainable growth.
Key achievements shared during the conference include adopting the Future Minerals Framework, creating centres of excellence, launching responsible mining standards, and aligning with the World Bank’s new mining strategy. These steps ensure mining in Saudi Arabia is sustainable and connected to global supply chains.
The conference focused on improving mining practices, sustainability, and global cooperation. Minister Al-Khorayef stressed the importance of critical minerals for technologies like artificial intelligence and the green energy shift.
All these efforts fit with Saudi Vision 2030, the Kingdom’s plan to diversify its economy. By using its mineral resources wisely, Saudi Arabia aims to attract investment and grow its mining sector into a key part of the economy and global markets.
