EVM Glitches Reported in Pune PMC Polls, Replacement Machines Deployed Fast
January 15, 2026
On January 15, 2026, early voting in the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) elections saw some Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) glitch. NCP (SP) leader Rohit Pawar reported incidents of EVMs shutting down in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad. He also said some machines had a time lag of up to 15 minutes. The PMC has 165 seats across 41 wards.
Mr. Pawar raised concerns about irregular blinking lights after voting and said, "In some places, light was blinking after casting a vote for the third candidate, while in some cases, despite casting all four votes, the mandatory light was not blinking. All these things are suspicious. The State Election Commission should give a clarification and ensure that the chaos regarding EVMs is cleared so that voting is conducted in a free and fair manner."
Election official Omprakash Divte said 15 to 20 EVMs showed errors soon after polling began. "However, substitute machines kept with sectoral election officers were immediately deployed and polling continued in those wards without any glitch," he added. Mr. Divte also said there were no complaints about indelible ink being wiped off.
Voting turnout was reported at an average of 23% till 1:30 p.m. in the PMC polls. Large-scale arrangements were made for the elections in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad municipal corporations.
