January 16, 2026
A large fire erupted after an explosion at a building near Visscherssteeg, an alley in Utrecht’s city centre. At least four people were injured, officials confirmed. The cause of the blast is still unknown. The local safety authority said several buildings collapsed, and there are reports of severe damage. They added that some people might still be trapped under the rubble. An eyewitness told RTL News they heard a “deafening bang” and saw “everything in the alley was destroyed.” Others told Volksrant newspaper that walls and windows of many buildings blew out, damaging several shops nearby. Local residents have been evacuated for safety. The public has been advised to keep away from the area. The local fire department is unable to enter the damaged building due to the risk of further collapse, Dutch broadcaster NOS reported.
