The vote counting for the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections starts today at 10 a.m. at 23 centres in Mumbai. Municipal Commissioner and District Election Officer Bhushan Gagrani confirmed this. The BMC said the counting will follow strict guidelines from the Election Commission of India and the Model Code of Conduct. The plan for vote counting has been approved by the Municipal Commissioner, the BMC said in a statement on January 15, 2026. Polling ended Thursday evening with State Election Commissioner Dinesh Waghmare estimating voter turnout between 46% and 50%. This is higher than the turnout in the 2017 civic polls. During polling, a controversy arose over the use of marker ink rather than "indelible" ink to mark voters’ fingers. This led to a row among voters and officials. The counting process will be closely watched to see which party wins control of Mumbai’s key municipal body.
