Russia Affirms Greenland as Danish, Criticizes US Annexation Threats
January 16, 2026
On January 16, 2026, the Kremlin stated that Russia sees Greenland as Danish territory. It called the security situation around the island "extraordinary" under international law. Russia slammed the West for accusing Russia and China of threatening Greenland. It called such claims double standards and morally flawed. This comes after US President Donald Trump suggested annexing Greenland, citing its strategic importance and resources. Trump has not ruled out using force to take the island, which is an autonomous part of NATO ally Denmark. European nations sent a small military presence to Greenland at Denmark's request this week. On January 15, Russia’s Foreign Ministry said on X that tensions over Greenland show the failure of the West's “rules-based international order” and criticized Copenhagen's alignment with the US. Meanwhile, a bipartisan US delegation of 11 lawmakers, led by Senator Chris Coons, met Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen and Greenlandic leader Jens-Frederik Nielsen to assure them of US congressional support despite Trump's threats. Coons emphasized the need to strengthen alliances instead of driving allies away. The delegation includes Republicans Thom Tillis and Lisa Murkowski but is mainly Democrats. This visit followed a White House meeting with Danish and Greenland officials, where the US position on acquiring Greenland did not change. On peace efforts, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russia is in talks with the US for Ukraine peace but not with Europe. Moscow plans to host Trump’s envoy Steve Witkoff and son-in-law Jared Kushner for talks, though no dates are fixed yet.
