12.8 Lakh Seek Voter Inclusion as Tamil Nadu's Electoral Roll Trims to 5.43 Crore
January 16, 2026
The Claims and Objections period under Tamil Nadu's Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral roll ends on January 18. Since December 19, over 12.8 lakh electors have submitted Forms 6 and 6A to be included in the voter list. The draft roll was published after enumeration, showing a sharp cut from 6.41 crore to 5.43 crore electors. This was due to nearly 97.37 lakh names being deleted to cleanse the roll. More than 32,000 electors sought exclusion from the list according to Election Commission data. Political parties combined have 2.72 lakh Booth Level Agents (BLAs). The DMK, AIADMK, and BJP each have over 60,000 agents. Yet, only around 100 applications for inclusion or exclusion were filed directly by parties. DMK sources said BLAs helped voters file claims instead of filing themselves, considering the process simple. The DMK IT Wing coordinated the effort with its 68,000 BLAs and equal number of Booth Digital Agents (BDAs). DMK IT Wing secretary and Industries Minister T.R.B. Rajaa said, “Even while being the only party that raised concerns about the pace of the SIR process in Tamil Nadu, the DMK also helped people who risked losing their right to vote and supported the Booth Level Officers, who were under huge mental stress due to the workload.” BDAs used technology to track draft rolls and assist electors in filling forms. The AIADMK supported the cleansing exercise, holding many meetings and appointing district and constituency functionaries to oversee the process. I.S. Inbadurai of AIADMK said their BLAs worked hard at booths during enumeration and after publishing the draft roll. They traced electors missing from the draft and helped them get enrolled. He added, “We hope that the final roll will be clean.”
