SFI’s Martyr’s Column Unveiling at Govt Law College Sparks Tension with KSU
January 17, 2026
A day after unveiling a martyr’s column at Government Law College, Barton Hill, the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) held a peaceful remembrance meeting on January 17, 2025. The memorial honours former college union chair M.A. Sakeer. The event on Friday led to clashes between SFI and Kerala Students’ Union (KSU). SFI district secretary M.A. Nandan said they will approach the court, as no law prevents a memorial for the college’s 150th anniversary. The column was erected with students’ wishes and alumni support. The KSU blamed SFI for Friday’s clashes, noting the college had issued a stop memo and suspended four SFI activists. They claimed to hold a High Court stay against the column’s construction. Nonetheless, SFI unveiled the memorial and shared it on social media. KSU demands the column’s demolition and remains firm on this stance.
