Hubballi Airport Expansion Sparks Protest Over Delay in Alternative Site Allotment
January 17, 2026
Several displaced families protested outside the Hubballi-Dharwad Urban Development Authority (HDUDA) office on Saturday. They lost homes and plots during land acquisition for Hubballi Airport expansion. The protesters said HDUDA delayed giving them alternative land. Ragotham N. Kulkarni, protest leader from ‘Hubballi Viman Nildana Santrastara Okkoota’, accused HDUDA officials of providing wrong data to the government and Karnataka High Court. Because of this, people did not get alternative sites at Rayanal and Bhairidevarakoppa in Hubballi. Kulkarni also raised concerns over unfair compensation rates. He said the Karnataka Industrial Areas Development Board (KIADB) paid ₹600 per sq ft in 2008 for Survey No. 594B plots in Unakal village, but compensation was only ₹450 per sq ft in 2011-12 for similar plots. He added that HDUDA previously charged ₹224 per sq ft for alternative sites but has now raised the rate to ₹485, which he called unfair. Among the protesters was 80-year-old Parvati Pagade. She said her late husband owned the plot and the family has waited over ten years for rehabilitation. They still live in a rented home with their son and grandchildren, struggling to pay rent. HDUDA Chairman Shakir Sanadi and MLA M.R. Patil met the protesters. Sanadi assured them that a meeting would be held in his office on January 24 to review documents and address issues. The protesters later submitted a memorandum to the chairman.
