CMC Vellore Marks Global Interventional Radiology Day with Free Ultrasound Tests and Educational Events
January 17, 2026
Christian Medical College (CMC) in Vellore celebrated Global Interventional Radiology Day with a variety of events. The Department of Clinical Radiology set up educational stalls and offered free ultrasound tests to over 400 people above 45 years old. I. Rajesh, medical superintendent, said, "The Department of Interventional Radiology in CMC provides minimally invasive image guided procedures. It helps to reduce the total stay of the patients in the hospital and recover faster." Succeena Alexander, vice-principal of CMC, traced the history, stating that "it was Charles Dotter who successfully performed the first angioplasty under X-Ray guidance at CMC in 1964." Over time, the specialty has expanded to many procedures. Visitors learned about pinhole procedures like opening blocked blood vessels, closing bleeding vessels, and draining blocked bile and urine tubes through models and videos created by staff and students. The event also highlighted the role of embolisation in treating uterine fibroids and knee joint problems without surgery. The importance of quick hospital visits in case of stroke was emphasized. The celebration took place at CMC's Vellore and Ranipet campuses. Shyamkumar N. Keshava, Head of the Department of Clinical Radiology, along with senior staff Gnanamurthy, Sridhar Gibikote, and Anu Eapen were present.
