Three migrant labourers died when a mudslide hit a construction site near Coonoor, Nilgiris, on Saturday evening. The deceased were Najibul Haque (24), Obidur Rahman (25), and Hadil Hakkim (38), all from Murshidabad, West Bengal. Police said they were digging a pit under a steep slope at the Odhanatti site near Jagathalli when the slope gave way. Mud and debris fell on them. Fellow workers and locals rushed to help. Earth movers were used in the rescue. Police said one man was rescued alive but died on the way to Coonoor Government Hospital. The police have registered a case. They are investigating if the landowners and construction managers had proper permissions and followed safety rules. This is the second deadly construction accident in Nilgiris this month. In December 2025, two men died when an illegal well collapsed near Kil Kotagiri.
