27-Day-Old Baby Dies of Hypothermia in Gaza as Child Death Toll Hits Eight This Winter
January 18, 2026
A 27-day-old baby named Aisha Ayesh al-Agha died on Saturday in Gaza due to severe cold. This tragic loss raises the number of children who died from hypothermia this winter to eight, said the Palestinian health ministry. Medical sources told Anadolu news agency that Aisha was brought to Nasser hospital in Khan Younis too late to save her. No other details about her condition were shared. Reports from Physicians for Human Rights and the University of Chicago Law School reveal the Gaza war has caused a rise in maternal and newborn deaths. Between January and June 2025, there were 2,600 miscarriages, 220 pregnancy-related deaths, 1,460 premature births, over 1,700 underweight newborns, and more than 2,500 infants needing intensive care. Mothers in Gaza face tough choices to survive, with fuel shortages, blockade of medical supplies, displacement, and bombardment destroying healthcare. Many now live in overcrowded tents. Births dropped by 41% in early 2025 compared to 2022, showing how hard life has become. UNICEF’s James Elder reported over 100 children have died since the October ceasefire. Though fighting has slowed, it has not stopped. Recent storms worsened the crisis, causing deaths and flooding in camps. Strong winds also destroyed tents, killing at least four people. The Gaza health ministry said a one-year-old baby died from hypothermia overnight on Tuesday. Since the ceasefire, at least 464 Palestinians died and nearly 1,280 were injured in Israeli attacks, the health ministry added.
