NRI's 11-Year Struggle in US Ends as He Plans to Return to India After H-1B Failures
January 18, 2026
A 35-year-old NRI named Sai shared his tough journey living in the US for nearly 11 years. Despite completing two master's degrees and a PhD, Sai never won the H-1B visa lottery despite applying eight times. He said, "I worked hard, followed the rules, and tried to build a stable life, unfortunately, despite applying for the H1b visa almost eight times, I was never selected even once in the lottery." The visa uncertainty caused him to lose jobs and live in constant fear about his future.
Sai also said his visa status affected his personal life. "Because of my visa situation, I never got married, there were no matches, people were not willing to marry someone without a stable visa status," he said. While many peers settled down, bought homes, and raised families, Sai remained stuck. He added, "The hardest part was explaining all this to my parents, they couldn't fully understand my situation, they would compare my life with others my age and ask why I hadn't settled down yet, it hurt deeply, but I stayed silent most of the time."
Sai shared his story to highlight the struggles faced by many NRIs trying their best but facing failure, silence, and survival in the US. Now, after years of hard work and uncertainty, Sai is planning to move back to India.
