Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, and K.C. Venugopal met with Tamil Nadu Congress Committee and Puducherry leaders in New Delhi on Saturday. They gathered views about forming a pre-poll alliance with the DMK and sharing power in Tamil Nadu. The All India Congress Committee (AICC) leaders listened individually to the party's MLAs and MPs from Tamil Nadu but did not announce any decision. Party general secretary Venugopal told reporters, "The party unanimously endorsed the AICC president and the leader of the Opposition (Rahul Gandhi) to take a decision. With regard to the election, the high command will take an appropriate decision in due course in the interest of the ideology of the party and the people of Tamil Nadu." He also said senior leaders were told to maintain discipline and speak with one voice, avoiding social media statements on the alliance. A leader at the meeting said some wanted the DMK to "respect the sentiments of the Congress members in the State and their demand for more seats and a share in power." However, another leader stated, "there is no change in the Congress party’s decision to go along with the DMK in the Assembly election." About 42 leaders including MPs, MLAs, and former TNCC presidents and secretaries attended. While Congress is pressing for power sharing, no leader talked of breaking the DMK alliance yet. Some feel the party might contest more seats by allying with actor Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam. Party sources said the DMK leadership does not support sharing power with partners and that former Union Minister A. Raja told Rahul Gandhi this during his recent Gudalur visit.
