Two Convicts Assault Assistant Jailer in Bengaluru Prison Amid Tightening Security
January 18, 2026
Bengaluru: On January 7, 2026, two convicts at Parappana Agrahara central prison assaulted Assistant Jailer S. Murthy during a routine check. The convicts, Ananda and Abdul Ghani, sparked a fight after inmates requested to meet the Superintendent, and the request was refused. The argument escalated quickly, leading to a physical attack on the jailer.
The Prison Department conducted an internal probe and filed a formal complaint. Police then registered an FIR against the two under sections related to assaulting a government servant on duty. Investigation is ongoing.
S. Murthy reported serious security gaps for prison staff, warning that officials are vulnerable during daily duties. "Officials were vulnerable to attacks by inmates during routine duties," he said, urging immediate safety upgrades.
This incident highlights ongoing problems in the prison system. A recent high-level committee report submitted to the Home Minister also stressed the urgent need to strengthen prison staff security.
In response, prison officials have stepped up surprise inspections. On January 15, they found three mobile phones hidden in a dustbin near Room No. 5, Tower 1, Barrack 4. Since November, over 135 mobile phones, more than 100 SIM cards, and other banned items were seized inside the jail.
These measures show authorities are taking serious steps to control contraband and protect staff in the troubled prison environment.
