Israeli Far-Right Coalition Rejects US Gaza Peace Plan, Criticizes Netanyahu
January 18, 2026
Far-right members of Israel’s government on Sunday rejected a US-supported plan for governing Gaza after the war. They criticized Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for not annexing Gaza or creating new Israeli settlements there. After the White House announced world leaders for a new Gaza "board of peace," including Turkey and Qatar who have criticised Israel’s war, far-right finance minister Bezalel Smotrich called Netanyahu’s “unwillingness to take responsibility for Gaza” the "original sin." Smotrich, a settler himself, said Netanyahu should “establish a military government there, to encourage immigration and settlement, and in this way to ensure Israel’s security for many years.”
The US plan includes a Gaza executive board with Turkey’s foreign minister Hakan Fidan and Qatari diplomat Ali al-Thawadi among others. Smotrich told X, “The countries that inspired Hamas cannot be the ones that replace it. Those who support it and continue to host it even now will not be granted a foothold in Gaza. Period.” He urged Netanyahu to stand firm, even if it means a dispute with US officials.
Netanyahu met coalition partners Sunday to calm tensions. His key challenge is managing far-right allies crucial for his government who never agreed to a US-brokered ceasefire last October. Netanyahu also opposed the plan Saturday, saying some appointments were “not coordinated with Israel and were contrary to its policy,” without naming who. He instructed foreign minister Gideon Sa’ar to speak to US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
Israel has strongly objected to Turkey’s role in Gaza after relations worsened since the war began in October 2023. Besides naming Turkey’s foreign minister to the board, Trump invited Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan to the main board of peace, along with Egypt’s President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi, former UK PM Tony Blair, and Argentina’s President Javier Milei.
The plan has three bodies: the board of peace chaired by Trump, a Palestinian technocratic committee for Gaza’s governance, and the Gaza executive board. The Palestinian committee met for the first time in Cairo on Saturday. The US has shifted focus to disarming Hamas and rebuilding Gaza, following an October 7 attack by Hamas that triggered Israel’s military offensive.
Since the ceasefire last October, 451 Palestinians have died amid ongoing violence. Gaza’s situation remains dire with recent storms causing deaths and flooding in displacement camps. Strong winds last week toppled walls onto tents, killing four displaced Palestinians. On Saturday, a 27-day-old baby died from cold, marking eight child deaths from hypothermia this winter, according to the Palestinian health ministry.
