NASA's Huge SLS Moon Rocket Moves to Launch Pad for Artemis II Mission
January 19, 2026
NASA took almost 12 hours to move its gigantic Space Launch System (SLS) Moon rocket and Orion Space Capsule from Kennedy Space Center to a launch pad about 4 miles (6.4 km) away. The rocket moved very slowly, at just 0.82 mph (1.3 km/h). This careful journey happened on Saturday. The rocket is part of the Artemis II mission but will not launch before 6 February. The mission will last about 10 days and plans to send four astronauts farther into space than anyone before. It aims to prepare for a human landing on the Moon’s surface, the first since 1972.
