January 19, 2026
At least five people died and many others were hurt after two high-speed trains crashed near Adamuz, close to Cordoba in southern Spain on Sunday evening. A train from Malaga to Madrid derailed and hit a neighboring track. A second train coming from Madrid to Huelva also derailed. Rail operator Adif said the accident occurred about 10 minutes after the Malaga train left at 18:40 local time. Emergency services reported at least 25 people seriously injured, with more suffering minor wounds. Around 300 passengers were on board, confirmed Iryo, the private rail company. RTVE journalist Salvador Jimenez, traveling on one train, said, "I was in the first carriage. There was a moment when it felt like an earthquake and the train had indeed derailed. They called immediately to see if there were people in the health service who could help, they took hammers to break the windows and in the end they evacuated us." All rail travel between Madrid and Andalusia was stopped after the accident. Spain's Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said the government is working closely with emergency teams to assist those affected. Regional president Juanma Moreno expressed his support for victims and families.
