Landslide Risk Prompts Protective Netting, Heavy Vehicle Ban on Thamarassery Ghat Road
January 19, 2026
Authorities in Kerala are acting fast to secure the Thamarassery Ghat Road, a key link between Kozhikode and Wayanad. Due to landslide risks near the ninth hairpin bend, officials decided to install high-tensile protective netting. The location saw a major landslip on August 26 last year that blocked the road for two days.
Kozhikode Collector Snehel Kumar Singh led the recent meeting that finalized this decision. Dilip Buildcon, the company building the tunnel road project, will handle the netting installation. To reduce traffic issues, a strict ban on multi-axle and other heavy vehicles is in place until all renovations finish.
Road widening work started in January, costing ₹37 crore, to boost safety and traffic flow. Over 400 trees were cut near the sixth to eighth hairpin bends to help widen the road. Despite rules, some heavy vehicles still used this road, causing breakdowns and major traffic jams. These delays affected emergency services and travelers badly.
Police officers are now ordered to enforce entry curbs strictly. A rapid response system is setting up to quickly manage accidents or breakdowns. The Thamarassery tahsildar will coordinate crane services stationed near the ninth bend for swift action.
The project aims to widen three narrow points on the ghat road. This includes expanding the carriageway, building footpaths, and adding handrails. The road width will grow from 14.55 meters to 17.3 meters near the curves and from 26.5 meters to 38.15 meters mid-bend. When finished, this will ease traffic and enhance road safety significantly.
