January 19, 2026
South Africa has sent a rescue team to Mozambique after local politician Andile Mngwevu was swept away by floodwaters. Mngwevu, a councillor from Ekurhuleni near Johannesburg, and four others were caught in floodwaters in Mozambique's Gaza province. Only one passenger is accounted for; others' status is unknown. The municipality stated, "The status and whereabouts of the other occupants remain unconfirmed." Flooding has devastated Mozambique and South Africa, killing more than 100 in Mozambique and over 30 in South Africa since November. Mozambique's President Daniel Chapo canceled his World Economic Forum trip due to the crisis. South African President Cyril Ramaphosa confirmed, "Two helicopters had been deployed to help Mozambique for a number of days until their situation subsides." Mozambique has declared a red alert and South Africa a national disaster. Weeks of floods have damaged infrastructure, affecting 400,000 people according to the UN. The rainy and cyclone season continues to threaten further damage in both nations.
